2020 NRV Home Expo Goes Virtual

September 8, 2020 - The New River Valley Home Builders Association (NRVHBA) is excited to announce that in lieu of an in-person event this year, the annual NRV Home Expo is now virtual! The NRVHBA made the decision to postpone the in-person event at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, but as the pandemic continued and guidance surrounding large in-person events remained restrictive, the NRVHBA decided to move the event to a virtual platform so that all exhibitors and sponsors would still have the opportunity to be showcased and have their name in front of the community.

You are now able to see all of the exhibitors of this year’s event in one location on a website dedicated to showcasing their services and products. Find a local company to help you with any of your home care needs, from buying, building, or remodeling to landscaping, HVAC, and roofing services. Find exhibitors by category, download catalogs, view galleries, and contact each exhibitor to discuss your next home project. The website will also feature a virtual kid’s zone with downloadable activities, as well as a page highlighting the trades education opportunities throughout the New River Valley and surrounding areas. In addition, companies participating in the event have posted available employment opportunities on a dedicated job board on the site.

Additionally, when visiting the site, you can enter the 2020 Virtual NRV Home Expo Giveaway for your chance to win a $500 credit towards a participating and eligible exhibitor.

NRVHBA Awards Annual Rick Whitney Memorial Scholarship

[Christiansburg, VA] June 25, 2020 — The New River Valley Home Builders Association (NRVHBA) is excited to announce the recipient of the annual Rick Whitney Memorial Scholarship.

The mission of the NRVHBA Scholarship Committee is to support the future growth of the construction industry by providing aid to deserving students planning to enroll in construction-related studies at Virginia's colleges, trade schools and within working internships.

The NRVHBA requests applications from graduating high school students in Montgomery, Giles, Pulaski, Floyd, Wythe, and Carroll Counties, as well as the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg and the City of Radford.

This year, the NRVHBA is proud to announce Isaac McHone, of Max Meadows, as the Rick Whitney Memorial Scholarship recipient. Though many outstanding applications were received, Isaac’s combined educational, extracurricular, and work experience pushed him to the top of the group.

Isaac became interested in learning about the trades after building a house with his dad. He took building trades classes in his junior and senior years at Fort Chiswell High School and is looking forward to furthering his career in the plumbing field. He has been accepted to Wytheville Community College and plans to earn his Master Plumber license. The NRVHBA looks forward to having Isaac as a future building industry member of the community and wishes him luck in his educational and career endeavors.

About the Rick Whitney Memorial Scholarship: Rick Whitney came to the New River Valley area in 1997 and was employed as Vice President of Construction for SAS Construction, LLC. Rick was instrumental in developing and constructing Knollwood Townhomes, the Glen, and The Meadows at Northside Park, Cedarfield Subdivision and Cedarfield Apartments. He became an avid member of the New River Valley Home Builders Association in 1997, Builder Director in 1997, Vice President in 1998 and President of the Association in 1999. As a father, Rick recognized the importance of education to young people. To encourage others to pursue their dreams, this scholarship was established to honor his many accomplishments.

Design Excellence: Best New Home

To be the best new home in the NRV, the chosen home had a lot to live up to. These nominees were judged by their peers on the overall exterior and interior design and construction, the function and creative use of interior space, creative integration of plan design with site considerations, unique features and fixtures, and innovative use of flooring and wall treatments. But overall, the house had to stand out both inside and out.

Design Excellence: Best Remodeled Home

When accepting a remodeling project, there are often more considerations that need to be addressed than a new home since you are having to work with existing walls and placements. This year’s best remodeled home nominees all had houses that showed creative integration of both site and interior constraints.  They showcased unique selections of furniture, fixtures and amenities. But when a remodel project is completed there must be obvious quality improvement and the nominees each did an outstanding job showing this.

Design Excellence: Best Bathroom

Bathrooms tend to be one of the smallest rooms in a house even though they serve many roles and daily tasks. Layout, function and integration of design make a huge difference when creating a one of a kind bathroom. Cabinetry finishes and fixtures often are the highlights or the design features for this highly used space. So, making sure that every detail is considered is important. Both of these nominees put together exceptional examples of functional, yet beautiful spaces and the votes showed it.

Design Excellence: Best Outdoor Living

Outdoor areas or rooms extend the living space of a home. Some are adjacent to the home such as in a case of a covered patio while others are completely detached. What makes an outdoor living area different from a simple functionary roof or patio is the livability of it. The same design considerations used to design a kitchen or family room are applied to the natural areas outside of the home – function, appeal and use of fixtures and amenities.
