Ed Tuchler, son of an electrical contractor, graduated from Virginia Tech in 1983 with a Bachelors degree in Architecture. After a brief stint in graduate school and a 2,000 mile hike of the Appalachian Trail, he returned to Blacksburg to work in the construction field. In 1988 he was hired as a carpenter with the newly formed Shelter Alternatives, Inc., a custom design-build company focusing on creatively designed and energy-efficient single family projects. Ed worked as a field supervisor for 12 years before moving into the office to assist with company management in 2001, and then in 2005, becoming sole owner of Shelter Alternatives. He started Energy Check, a sub-company, in 2007 to improve the efficiency of existing homes in the community through diagnostics and repairs using lessons learned and skills acquired from years of studying and applying building science. He has served 2 years as NRVHBA president, several as treasurer as well many years as the education chair.
