Radford High School’s Microgrant Success Story

At the New River Valley Home Builders Association, we believe in investing in the future of the building industry. Through our microgrant program, we are proud to support local schools and programs that introduce students to the wide range of rewarding careers in construction. One recent recipient of our microgrant funding was the electricity program at Radford High School.
With support from NRVHBA members, Radford High School students designed and built a four-station mock wall to simulate residential electrical installation. Using a blueprint designed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and utilized in SkillsUSA competitions, the students installed a working electrical system that included:
A full residential panel and multiple branch circuits
GFCI and AFCI receptacles
3-way and 4-way switch configurations
Various light fixtures and outlets
A doorbell system with a transformer and both front and rear buttons
The hands-on project gave students real-world experience in reading blueprints, using tools for drilling, pulling cable, and installing boxes and wiring. It also emphasized key safety practices when working with ladders, spade drill bits, and electrical systems.
Beyond technical skills, students gained experience in teamwork, collaboration, and learning how their work as electricians fits into the broader picture of residential construction. They discussed how proper electrical rough-ins support the work of drywall, HVAC, plumbing, and other trades reinforcing the importance of communication and coordination on a job site.
Thanks to this project, several students are now exploring careers in the trades. Three students have already pre-enrolled in the electrical program at New River Community College, while others have expressed interest in pursuing apprenticeships or jobs in the construction field.
We’re proud to play a part in helping students build brighter futures and thank Radford High School for their dedication to workforce development.
